FM.E.129 CUTS A 10 CM SQUARE IN 2
This is a direct continuation of FM.E.128, and teaches a child to open and close the scissors repeatedly to cut across a piece of paper.
How to Assess
Materials: Kindergarten scissors and several 10 cm squares of paper.
Method: As for FM.E.128 using 10 cm squares. Give 3 tries.
Score plus if your child cuts right across the square in at least 2 out of 3 tries.
How to Teach
Continuing on from FM.E.128 and following the same method, work through the following steps.
- Cuts across a 3 cm strip.
- Cuts across a 4 cm strip.
- Cuts across a 6 cm strip.
- Cuts across an 8 cm square.
- Cuts across a 10 cm square.
Use more, or fewer, steps, according to your child’s progress.
Playtime and Round-the-house Activities
As for earlier cutting activities, except that now you will have greater scope for varying methods. Your child may enjoy cutting magazine pictures in 2 and then putting the pieces back together again – like a puzzle.
Remembering and Extending
If your child enjoys cutting, you might like to try the following extension skills, which are taken from the 4-5-year-old skills in the Macquarie Program:
- Cuts along a 20 cm line.
- Cuts out a 10 cm square, turning the paper at the corners.
- Cuts out a semicircle (5 cm diameter) drawn on the edge of the paper.
- Cuts out a 5 cm circle, turning the paper.
