RL.B.17 WAVES OR CLAPS ON VERBAL DIRECTION

Here you will extend the teaching begun in RL.B.13, by gradually phasing out your demonstrations of waving and/or clapping (or other gestures which your child imitates). Responding to the word ‘give’ is discussed a little later, in RL.B.21.

How to Assess

Method: Make eye contact with your child, and say ‘Wave bye-bye’ or ‘Clap hands’. Do not demonstrate. If there is no response, try again on another occasion.

Score plus if your child waves or claps in response to your direction. Her waving or clapping need not be very accurate, but it must be clear that she is trying to do what you have asked.

How to Teach

Continuing on from RL.B.13, begin to ask your child to wave or clap (or make some other familiar action) without showing her first. If she does not respond, remind her with a demonstration, then give the direction again. The best reward for a correct response is for you to join in the action once she has started.
