RL.C.23 POINTS TO DISTANT OBJECTS OUT OF DOORS
In this item, the child is asked to point to something she cannot touch – something that is far away.
How to Assess
Method: When out of doors or looking out the window, ask your child to point to something that is far away, such as a plane or a tree or a car. Use whatever direction feels comfortable – ‘Point to the plane’ or ‘Show me the tree’ or ‘Where’s the Car?’
Score plus if your child can indicate at least one object in this way.
How to Teach
Make a habit of pointing out interesting distant objects to your child whenever opportunities arise. Make sure that there are a few which you refer to often, so that the names become familiar.
If necessary, help your child to point in the early stages.
Playtime and Round-the-house Activities
This is a good activity for car trips, provided that your child can see out the window. Make a game of it, involving other family members as well.
Inside the house, point out the lights (these are often fascinating to small children), mobiles in your child’s bedroom and pictures on the wall.
Remembering and Extending
This is an easy skill to maintain and extend – pointing out objects in the environment will become second nature to you!
