RL.E.81 SELECTS THE MEMBER OF A GROUP THAT IS DIFFERENT
Apart from the general usefulness of the word ‘different’, it is a concept that is emphasised in the pre-reading programs of many schools.
This skill can be assessed and taught at the same time as R.E.80 (selecting ‘same’) or it can be introduced once ‘same’ has been mastered.
Start by using the same materials as for RL.E.80, saying ‘Which one is different?’, and eliminating the matching step from the teaching process. For variety, make cards showing 3 identical pictures or shapes, and one different one, and say ‘Point to the one which is different’. Or make a row of 4 objects, 3 the same and one different. Make sure you vary the position in which the different one is placed.
A child who can answer questions with ‘yes’ and ‘no’ can be shown 2 objects and asked ‘Are these the same?’ or ‘Are these different?’
You can extend this skill by reducing the amount of difference between the pictures or objects you use.
