GM.A.7 ON BACK, BRINGS HANDS TOGETHER ON CHEST

With the baby gaining control of her head in the midline comes the ability to bring her hands together on her chest. This skill is important to the child’s ability to play.

How to Assess

Method: Place the child on her back on a firm surface. If she enjoys grasping objects, give her a toy to play with. Score plus if your child lies with her head in the midline and her chin tucked in, as described in the previous item, and keeps her hands together at chest level.

How to Teach

This skill can be taught while you practise the midiine skills in the previous item. While you have your child cradled on your lap, as described in the previous item, offer her a toy, fairly close to her chest, and wait for her to bring her hands forward to grasp it. Alternatively, place her on a firm pillow, put your hands behind her shoulders and help her to lift her shoulders and arms forward. While both your hands are occupied, you may find it easier to help her reach towards your face. Next, try assisting just one arm and wait for her to bring the other arm forward herself. Gradually reduce your help as she gains more control.

Positioning, Carrying and Playing

You can help your child to bring her hands forward in almost every position in which you place or carry her. Be aware of all the things you can help her to touch and feel: your face and hair, toys, your breast or the bottle at teed times, your clothing and of course her own clothes, body and hands.
