GM.B.92 STANDS FROM A SMALL CHAIR WITHOUT USING HANDS FOR SUPPORT

This is an extension of GM.B.78 (stands from a small stool). In the earlier skill, it was permissible for the child to use her hands to push up, but now the child needs to stand without using her hands for support.

How to Assess

Materials: A child-size chair.

Method: Seat your child in the chair and ask her to stand. Score plus if your child can stand up from the chair without pushing up with her hands. If she is seated well back on the chair, she may use her hands to help herself wriggle forward, but she should not use her hands to help herself get to standing.

How to Teach

Refer to the notes on GM.B.78.

You can distract your child from pushing on her hands as she stands by offering her something to hold, either as she stands or before she begins to stand.
