GM.C.123 WALKS UP STAIRS, NOT HOLDING THE RAIL, ALTERNATING FEET
The child is now able to walk up stairs in an adult fashion.
How to Assess
Method: Ask your child to walk up a set of stairs. Avoid stairs which have a rise higher than your child’s knee. Score plus if your child walks up the stairs, alternate feet (one foot to each step) without holding onto a rail.
How to Teach
This skill is a natural progression from G.M.C.103, where the child used alternate feet but was permitted the use of the rail.
She will still need to hold on when the steps are high, so you may be restricted to child-size equipment, which is likely to have a rail. Make a game of walking up without holding on.
