GM.C.125 CARRIES OBJECTS UP AND DOWN STAIRS
Stairs are no longer a barrier to the child – all her bits and pieces can now be spread all over the house!
How to Assess
Materials: A set of stairs and some interesting toys.
Method: Ask your child to carry 2 toys up the stairs, then down again. Score plus if your child can carry the objects both up and down the stairs. She should not hold onto a rail. She may use 2 feet to a step coming down the stairs, but should alternate her feet going up.
How to Teach
Once the child has reached this stage of stair climbing, she is unlikely to need special teaching to learn to carry things up and down with her. The main thing is to give her opportunities to practise.
Is she is very dependent on the rail going down, walk beside her at first with a steadying hand on her shoulder to give her confidence. Let her move slowly, using 2 feet to a step. She will soon get the idea.
