FM.B.12 GRASPS A RATTLE ACTIVELY
We look here at the child’s ability to open his hand to grasp a rattle.
How to Assess
Materials: A light rattle with a pencil-size stem.
Method: Lightly tap the back of your child’s fingers with the rattle.
Score plus if your child opens his hand and grasps the rattle.
How to Teach
Most babies will open their fingers when the backs of their hands are stroked gently down towards their wrists.
Begin by stroking your child’s hands like this, and slipping the rattle in when the fingers are open. If necessary, help your child to wrap his fingers around the stem.
Once he is opening his hands readily when stroked, tap his fingers lightly with the rattle instead. If he still needs extra stimulation to grasp the rattle, move it a little against his palm.
Give a clear direction – ‘Take’– each time you offer an object. Your child may not understand now, but he will, in time.
Playtime and Round-the-house Activities
Same as for FM.B.6 but now you are encouraging your child to open his hand, as well as to grasp the rattle.
Remembering and Extending
As well as going on to the next item in this sequence (holds 2 objects) look ahead to FM.B.15 and FM.B.l6, where the child must reach through a distance to attain a toy.
