FM.B.13 HOLDS 2 OBJECTS, WHEN GIVEN
Here is another way to extend the child’s grasping skills. Grasping 2 objects requires active concentration.
How to Assess
Materials: 2 small rattles or cubes.
Method: Place both objects in the child’s hands.
Score plus if your child holds both objects for 5 seconds.
How to Teach
You may need to help your child to keep his fingers closely around the objects, while he gets used to the feeling of holding 2.
Help him to raise his hands so that he can see both objects. If he enjoys it, help him to play by shaking and banging the 2 objects together (though it will probably be some time before he can do this by himself).
Playtime and Round-the-house Activities
When you can’t play directly with your child, put toys out for him that can easily be grasped in 2 hands. A cord threaded with cotton reels is ideal, or perhaps a bunch of large plastic babies’ keys or a chain of large, bright rings. Such toys are easier for babies to grasp in 2 hands when on their own than a collection of single items.
When you are cuddling your baby, encourage him to hold onto 2 of your fingers.
Remembering and Extending
Keep giving your child practice in this skill as you continue through the sequence. This skill will be directly extended when you reach FM.B.19 (picks up and holds 2 objects) but you can easily involve it in other activities in the meantime.
