GM.A.44 GETS TO SITTING FROM TUMMY

The sitting position has limited use for a child until she can get into the position by herself.

However, she must have the experience of independent sitting, and the broadened horizons that it brings, before she will be motivated to get to sit on her own.

How to Assess

Method: Place the child on her tummy and encourage her to sit up. Or observe her during play. Score plus if she gets from her tummy to sitting without aid.

How to Teach

This skill is a combination of getting into a crawl position (GM.A.39) and getting from a crawl position into a sitting position (GM.A.40). Use the same techniques, running them together into a smooth, continuous movement.

From now on, never put her down in a sitting position. Always put her on her tummy and help her to get into sitting from there.

She will pull her knees under her, and so get into the crawl position, and from there, pivot into sitting.
