GM.B.89 WALKS BETWEEN 2 PARALLEL LINES, 30 CM APART
This activity extends GM.B.82, where the child walks along a board with help. It helps the child to gain control in her walking, encourages her to walk with a narrow base (that is, without widely spread legs) and prepares her for the balance-beam activities later in the sequence.
How to Assess
Materials: Chalk, or 2 ropes, each 3 metres long.
Method: Draw 2 parallel lines on a paved area outside, each 3 metres long and 30 cm apart. Or make a similar walkway with two lengths or rope.
Ask your child to walk to you, staying between the lines. Score plus if your child walks between the lines for 3 metres.
How to Teach
Most children will acquire this skill if given regular opportunities to practise. You can make the required distances shorter to start with. A walkway like that described above can easily he included in an obstacle course, so that walking between lines can be practised at the same time as stepping over obstacles and stopping and turning.
