GM.E.110 JUMPS, FEET BARELY OFF THE GROUND

The skill continues on from the previous item in this sequence. Now the child is asked to jump without any hand support.

How to Assess

Method: Hold your child’s hands and encourage her to jump, demonstrating if necessary. Then ask her to jump without any support. Score plus if your child is able to bend her knees and spring up without any hand support. Her feet may barely leave the ground and will not necessarily work in unison.

How to Teach

Continue with the methods described in GM.E.86, gradually lessening your support and giving your child opportunities to jump without any support at all. A lot of perseverance is needed to teach jumping, so don’t despair of some time passes before your child can achieve this skill.

Maintain your child’s interest by finding new songs and new surfaces to jump on – particularly surfaces which help her to get some spring.
