RL.A.64 ATTENDS TO A STORY FOR 10 MINUTES, ONE TO ONE

In PS.A.55, we look at whether the child can attend to a story for 10 minutes in a group setting – at playgroup or preschool. Here we are concerned with whether your child can attend to a story for 10 minutes when it’s just the two of you.

How to Assess

Materials: A child’s storybook with 20 to 30 words to each page. The story should take about 10 minutes to read.

Method: Read the story to your child.

Score plus if your child attends to the story without being distracted by outside noises or stopping the story to talk about other things.

How to Teach

Build up gradually to this level from the short stories described in RL.A.37.

Try reading 2 or more short stories in a row, before progressing to longer stories.

If your child’s attention wanders during the story, bring it back by changing your pace or tone of voice, asking her simple questions (‘Can you see the …?’) or adding your own comments about what is happening.
