RL.B.15 RESPONDS TO OWN NAME BY TURNING

When your child achieves this skill, she shows that she can recognise one particular sound, out of all the sounds around her, as particularly relevant to her.

How to Assess

Method: Choose a time when you child is showing interest in something and there is plenty of chatter going on around her. Stand about 120 cm away and call her name.

Score plus if your child responds by turning and looking to you.

How to Teach

Many parents say: ‘Oh, but we never call by name. We call her all sorts of things – Tiddlywinks or Greedy-Guts or Cherry Pie, depending on her mood or ours.’ We certainly would not want to discourage this, as parents who do this usually use very lively and effective spontaneous language with their children. But if this is you, do try to use your baby’s name, or a consistent nickname, some of the time!
